SEX IN SOHO
WORKS

肃清

2024

肃清

The Sook Ching Massacre is a painful part of Singaporean history. The oppressive tools of objectifying, policing and executing utilised during the Japanese Occupation have been transformed into “necessities” of the now independent Singapore. The film explores the interconnectedness of the colonial occupations, judicial system, state killings and control.

As systematic violence is enacted onto bodies, solidarity within and beyond our collective memory is urgent. For the abolition of deep-rooted systems of violence and colonialism, we must remember the genocides and state killings both within and beyond the collective memory.

Bordered Bodies by CiEn Heong

BORDERED BODIES

2024

Border apartheid: the silencing and othering of bodies through oppressive colonial lines. As border fascism is on the rise, displaced people have nowhere to go. The forced movements of people have been exacerbated by climate change, poverty, genocide, and war; all of which originate from colonial histories and modern systems. The film aims to shift the narrative of immigrants and explore the role the West has played in their suffering. There is an urgent need for solidarity, decolonising movements and the abolishment of borders.

AUDRE LORDE'S “THE USES OF ANGER: WOMEN RESPONDING TO RACISM”

2024

AUDRE LORDE'S “THE USES OF ANGER: WOMEN RESPONDING TO RACISM”. by CiEn Heong.

Exploring decoloniality in the everyday to grow collective emotions of empathy and anger through Audre Lorde's text "The Uses of Anger: Women Responding to Racism". First film conceptualised for DecolonialThoughts.

Buried Treasure

BURIED TREASURE

2024

"Buried Treasure" is a short film reimagining queer South-East Asian identities as un-disciplinable, exploring histories hidden within the depths of nature through a decolonial lense. As censorship and accrediting the country's success to colonialism continues to prevail in Singapore, the film pushes for an intersectional resistance above the water and beyond the jungle.

PULAU KAMI/我们的岛

2024

Pulau Kami 我们的岛

"Our Island" is an essay film exploring post-colonial Singapore and its proximity to whiteness as a South-East Asian country from a de-colonial perspective. The film questions the relationship between its rapid urbanisation and its suppression of resistance through censorship - how the construction of privilege stifles out emotions.

I am a researcher, filmmaker/producer and community organiser from Singapore, based in London. I am passionate about documentary-making and essay videos as forms audiovisual art. I researched on audiovisual politics and archives, feminist media cultures, critical race theory, Third Cinema and decolonial resistance during my BA (Hons) Media and Communications in Goldsmiths. I intend to further explore these research fields and to organise workshops for communities to ensure accessible education.

Having had experience in client-based videos, I create films with brands and artists such as Music Videos or corporate interviews. My recent projects include producing short film I Can See How You Die; essay films Sook Ching and Bordered Bodies on Decolonial Thoughts’ platform; Pulau Kami which was screened at Cinelogue; production manager for short film ⅝; produced and directed short documentary Sex in Soho.

My aim is to center minorities and people of oppressed identities, especially that of South-East Asians and queer folks - I want to inspire revolutionary thinking and actions for a new world where all are liberated, beyond the boundaries of institutions and governments.
